Online Banking Update Requires Use Of Challenge PIN

There is a new login procedure for Online Banking.  All Online Banking Users will now use Challenge PIN for security authentication.

Summary of first login procedure:

  • On your first login you will be prompted to enter an email address or email-to-text address*
  • You will receive a Challenge PIN via email or text message
  • Without exiting the Online Banking screen, open a new browser window to check your email or check your cell phone for your Challenge PIN
  • Enter the 5-digit PIN after your username
  • After you successfully log into Online Banking you are prompted with two boxes: Authorize Computer and Public Computer
  • Authorizing your computer bypasses the need for a Challenge PIN when accessing Online Banking for the computer you are working on only
  • If you are unsure which box to click on, choose Public so you enter a Challenge PIN every time
  • You only want to authorize computers that are not used by other people, since authorizing reduces the security infrastructure because you are no longer prompted to enter a Challenge PIN

Subsequent Logins:

  • If you authorized your computer, Online Banking will show you the security image you chose when setting up Online Banking for the first time instead of sending you a Challenge PIN
  • Once the computer is authorized, the next time you log on to your account, the system will display your security image
  • When you see your chosen image, you then know that it is safe to enter your password
  • If you are already using Online Banking and your computer is currently authorized, you will not be required to use Challenge PIN as long as the authorization is in effect

*email-to-text refers to receiving your Challenge PIN on your cell phone as a text message

Frequently Asked Questions

Why the change to Challenge PIN?

1st Community Credit Union will implement new security requirements
for Online Banking in the month of December because the National
Credit Union Association has mandated compliance to the new security
requirements by January 2012.
Regulations have changed because in today's environment, "Security
Questions" are not secure enough to use for authentication to Online
Banking. With access to Google and social network sites like Facebook;
it has become easier to guess the answers to "Secret Questions". In
order to comply with the new regulations and to enhance our Online
Banking security 1st Community Credit Union will require Challenge PIN
to access a new computer through our Online Banking website.

Does this mean I have to enter a PIN whenever I want to log into Online Banking?

You will only have to enter a Challenge PIN if you are logging into a new
computer or if you do not authorize your computer when accessing
Online Banking.

How do I get my Challenge PIN?

You can receive your Challenge PIN either as a text message on your
cell phone or as an email to the email address you added to the system.

Does the PIN change every time I log in?

Yes, the PIN will change each time. Remember you will only get a
Challenge PIN if you don't authorize your computer.

What if I was already utilizing Challenge PIN? (formerly known as Random PIN)

If you are currently using Challenge PIN when logging into Online
Banking, nothing will change. You will continue to login as usual. If you
currently have to answer a question when logging in you will be required
to change to Challenge PIN.

How does Challenge PIN work?
Online Banking screen and click Login, it starts a transmission process.
Our server is notified that you want to access Online Banking, and the
system queries your username and sends a Challenge PIN to the email
address you have listed on the system. The Challenge PIN is sent to
your email address and you have to enter the Challenge PIN into the
Challenge PIN text box on the Online Banking screen below your username
